Women’s Forum

by Seyi Akiwowo

As chair of West Ham Labour Women’s Forum, I would first like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has bought tickets to our inaugural fundraising dinner with Dame Dawn Primarolo MP (Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons) and Lyn Brown MP (Shadow Minister for Communities) on Weds 18 June. As a Women’s Forum we are committed to ensuring that women in West Ham have the skills and support necessary in order to be able to achieve the same level of success as our male counterparts.

We are therefore very pleased to have been able to get the following commitments into the Newham Labour manifesto:

  • Domestic violence against women
  • Free English classes for the women who do not have it as their first  languag
  • Free cancer screening for women

The Women’s Forum are currently voting on which one of these commitments should be our focus for the next two years and the Deputy Speaker of the House of Common will announce the winning campaign on the night.

We also plan to donate a percentage of funds raised on the night to the ‘Bring Back Our Girls’ campaign in order to support our sisters in Nigeria.

Here is some more information about the fundraising dinner and please feel free to contact either myself or our Women’s Forum Treasurer Rania if you would like to purchase a ticket.
