by Cllr Veronica Oakeshott
Our speaker at February’s all members meeting (7.30pm at Harold Rd Centre) is Peter Watt former General Secretary of the Labour party. A trained nurse, foster carer and father of five, a determination to do the best for Britain’s children has been a strong thread running through Peter’s career. He is now a Director at the National Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC).
Peter worked his way up through the Labour party from a local organiser, to regional manager and was appointed as general secretary by the Party’s National Executive Committee in November 2005. He was not the candidate favoured by the then PM, Tony Blair, but won the NEC vote by some margin. He was General Secretary until November 2007.
Peter will be giving us his reflections on the current political issues of the day. He’ll also give us an update on what if anything has changed for children since the major child protection crises in Rotherham and elsewhere, and on his campaigning work to keep children’s safety high on the public agenda.
7.30pm, Thurs 25 Feb with speakers Lyn Brown MP and Peter Watt, Harold Rd centre, on the corner of Harod and Claude Rd, E13 0SE (nearest tubes are Upton Pk and Plaistow).
