Resignation message from West Ham CLP’s chair Ellie Robinson
Dear friends in West Ham Labour Party,
As some of you may have heard I have handed in my resignation from the council with immediate effect and also have had to stand down as Chair of West Ham GC.
It has been a very hard decision, and I feel very emotional about it – it has been an absolute honour and privilege representing Forest Gate North over the last six years and chairing the GC for the past year.
As some of you will know, I have been working for Sadiq Khan over the past year and following the excellent result a few weeks ago I have been offered the opportunity to be his Senior Advisor at City Hall. It is an honour to work for him to help deliver everything we campaigned for. However, the role is politically restricted which means I am no longer allowed to be a local councillor or hold a position in the local Party.
I remember my first local party meetings ten years ago and how welcoming and encouraging everyone was – thank you for the friendship, advice, leafleting, canvassing, hugs and support since then. But most importantly for the tireless efforts of our activists devoted to delivering a Labour Council and a Labour Government dedicated to improving the lives of our neighbours. Ultimately, if we didn’t have a Labour Council we in Newham wouldn’t be cracking down on bad landlords (we had the first licensing scheme in the country), we wouldn’t have free school meals for all our kids (and music lessons, and theatre tickets), we wouldn’t have agreed plans earlier this year to build 800 homes for homeless families and we wouldn’t have MoneyWorks (affordable credit and advice for those in financial difficulty). To name but a few things. Equally, if we didn’t have a Conservative government we wouldn’t have the cuts to welfare, cuts to public services and a dangerous lack of house building. So the fight continues.
I know we will continue to work together to change our little corner of the world, I will just have a different hat on! I look forward to that.
The LCF will be in touch with selection and by-election details soon, and as the next GC is the AGM anyway a new chair will be elected shortly.
I will continue to be West Ham’s biggest cheerleader and wish you all every success.
Love always, E
